Challenge statements

We are working on a series of statements that establish the fundamental points on which we challenge every believer to stand firm in the modern day. These statements are separate from our statement of faith, which is a summary of our belief in historic Christian orthodoxy.

We are writing our challenges to be as short and succinct as possible, so they are easy to read, and clear in their meaning. We will also be publishing articles to expand on the reasoning that undergirds them—so if you find yourself unpersuaded to accept a particular challenge, we encourage you to consider these longer works.

Although our focus is New Zealand, Jesus is the rightful sovereign of every nation. We therefore have written our challenges so that believers from around the world can sign their names to them, as his representatives in their own countries.

The Cornerstone Challenge (the primacy of Christ)

All of our challenge statements are based on this foundational document. It outlines the biblical teaching on the primacy of Christ over every domain, and its implications for the relationship between Church and State.

E Ihowa Atua,
Oh Lord, God
O ngā iwi mātou rā,
Of nations and of us too
Āta whakarongona;
Listen to us

Cherish us
Kia hua ko te pai;
Let goodness flourish
Kia tau tō atawhai;
May your blessings flow

Statement of faith

Repent NZ affirms the historic core doctrines of Christianity:

  1. We believe the Bible to be the inerrant Word of God, our only ultimate and infallible authority, sufficient to fully equip us with wisdom for salvation and godly living.

  2. We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. He is limited by nothing other than his own nature and character, which is holy, righteous, good, severe, loving and merciful. He made everything that has been made in six days, all very good, and foreordains whatever comes to pass, preserving and governing all his creatures and all their actions.

  3. We believe in the true deity and full humanity of our Lord Jesus Christ; in his virgin birth; in his sinless life; in his miracles; in his vicarious and atoning death through his shed blood; in his bodily resurrection for our justification; in his ascension to the right hand of the Father from where he now reigns over every created thing; and in his personal future return in power and glory.

  4. We believe in the full deity of the Holy Spirit, acknowledging him together with the Father and the Son in the works of creation and redemption; and in his present ministry indwelling Christians, enabling them to know God, understand his will, and live in accordance with it.

  5. We believe that because of Adam’s sin, all mankind is in rebellion against God; the only remedy for this rebellion is regeneration by the Holy Spirit; and the only way to escape judgment is to receive the covering of Christ’s righteousness. Salvation is therefore by grace alone, through faith alone, and our works can add nothing to our standing before God; yet a faith that saves does work through love by the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit.

  6. We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; the saved to the resurrection of life, and the lost to the resurrection of damnation.

  7. We believe in the spiritual unity of all believers as sons of God the Father, in our Lord Jesus Christ, through his Holy Spirit.
